I may live in the city, but I'm a country bumpkin at heart, so anytime there's an opportunity for us to frolic in the woods, I'm happy to drag the kids out on a "nature" experience. There's a swath of forest across the street from NAS Jax and today we went to a "squirrels" workshop at the nature center there with our neighbors. On our walk through the woods Miss L discovered a swallowtail butterfly caterpillar getting ready to pupate and later on the trail we found a huge banana spider on her spectacular glimmering web. We saw only one squirrel. He was carrying a plastic shopping bag to his nest, reminding us that we are still in the city after all. These are pictures of the caterpillar and Miss L and her big-girl friend M posing with the caterpillar.
As journalist I wrote about small town government and organic cheese farms. Now a decade later, I write about these very full days with four young children and our life on the move with the military. Writing is no longer my profession, but it's still my passion.

I am so delighted to be able to share in the day to day activities of my grandbabies and their mom via your thoroughly wonderful blog. Hugs to you all. And "Yahoo" to pupae and pupating and pupated caterpillars! Can't help but love that word.
