1. Our weather is waffling. One day it might barely reach 70 degrees, while others top out in the mid 80s.
The shifting seasons here don't bring dramatic changes, but I can say that there have been a handful of days in the past week that have at least not been too hot for this:
Real flames in the fireplace make this home cozy and at least trick us into believing it's fall.
2. One morning before N left for work this week, I listed a stream of thoughts I'd been having about some tasks I'd like us to get to sometime in the next couple of months.
I rattled off Christmas giving ideas, our need to find a new dresser for the baby, some window dressing issues in our bedroom and which day might be best for the children's Halloween party we hope to host.
I felt we needed to address all of this before N leaves this weekend for a week-long trip to the Middle East.
His response?
"You're nesting like crazy!"
3. I set some home-schooling goals for L's preschool year earlier this fall and N expressed some concern over how we would be addressing science--a valid concern, considering what my college transcript shows about my performance in physics and botany.
At any rate, I stumbled upon some helpful resources recently that I thought I'd share in case any of you also need some ideas for helping your child observe the natural world in spite of you.
First there's Mudpies to Magnets. This is specific to preschoolers and has some really fun experiments I think you can adapt to a home learning environment.
The other is one I found when I was searching for some information about herbal remedies that are safe to use with children. I stumbled upon The Kid's Herb Book, which is very crunchy but also loaded with great information to share with your child about the healing properties of plants. There's even a recipe for homemade rootbeer!
4. Speaking of science, we had a bird day at our house yesterday. We used Lois Ehlert's Feathers for Lunch as our launch pad along with this companion teaching guide for some project ideas.
We left some nest-building supplies out for the birds in our neighborhood and we're waiting to see what they take.
We made our own bird nests out of peanut butter, pretzel sticks and various kinds of breakfast cereal. We used giant grapes and marshmallows for eggs. Then we gobbled up our creations.
5. Despite a successful week of activity planning, better-than-average dinner menus, keeping the house clean, staying on top of the laundry and spending quality time with my husband and children, I'm feeling unsatisfied with my work.
I rarely have a full week where I feel like I'm accomplishing all of the goals I set out to tackle, but I did it all this week and I feel, well, let down.
I know some of you have had days or even weeks like this. What do you do when you need to get out of these ruts? How do I find fulfillment today? It can't involve running from the house with my Starbucks gift card--my husband is leaving town tomorrow.
6. If the wives tale is true about heartburn during pregnancy indicating a hairy baby, Tiny Baby is bound to have a full head of luscious tresses.
7. If I have to halt my blogging progress to print out another coloring page of a hippo ballerina or a Disney princess I'm going to lose my mind. It's time to end the quick takes here.
Have a great weekend all!
I have just found your lovley blog.
ReplyDeleteOur children love the Kid's Herb Book and we constatnly print out colouring pages of Disney Princesses.
I haven't heard the wives tale about heart burn at all.
My only observation is our dark haired babies have lots more hair and it grows faster too.
Blessings
I love your bird themed ideas! You are doing a fanTAStic job teaching your little ones.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had some advice for how to pull yourself out of a rut - even when things are going well - but I'm at a loss here. Maybe you're just looking forward to the next big thing, subconsciously, so the here and now is dulled? Maybe after your new baby is here, you'll feel more fulfilled. Or maybe after getting back from vacation, you're just missing that sense of comfort that comes from being surrounded by family? I don't know. I'm just spouting ideas :)
Whatever the case, I'd bet that whatever you're feeling -dissatisfaction or boredom - will end. This too shall pass, my mom always says. Sometimes it helps me feel better in the meantime. Sometimes I want to roll my eyes at her. But she's usually right :)
I love all these homeschooling ideas! I always think preschool science projects are fun, so we're definitely going to check out some of these books. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAs for your rut, I think I've felt something like what you're feeling, but I'm not sure I have any insightful advice. When I'm feeling this way, I usually try to spend some extra time playing outside with the girls or getting them together with friends, etc. Anything to make the day pass, I guess. Also,(especially when you're on your own) I think it's really important to use those evening hours to do something for yourself. Get caught up in a good book, sew something you're excited about, draw, take a bath, call an old friend who lives in Europe...you know, whatever inspires you...
I told you I had the labor dream and my baby girl had tons of hair. Could that be related to your tiny baby???? D, you're obviously doing a fantastic job at providing stimulating and educational worthy projects for the kids. Your efforts go way beyond what most mothers are doing for their preschoolers. I'm sending you extra love and prayers this week as N is gone. Be sure to ask your friends for help. They would most likely be very glad to spend time with you or give you a break.
ReplyDeleteI had horrible heartburn with Sophie and she was born with a mop of hair. The heartburn wasn't as bad this time around and Lucy had much less hair... there may be something to that old wives' tale!
ReplyDeleteD I had tons of heartburn with Greg & he was born bald & I had no heartburn with Alex & she had tons of black hair, which fell out so you never know... We wish you lot this week with N being gone!!! Hope the kids Halloween party is a blast.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! Firstly, I am SO jealous of your fireplace! Oh, how I would love to have one of those to snuggle in front of with a book in hand :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the science resources; We're plowing into homeschool preschool next year, and I'll be bookmarking this post for ideas!
As for ruts -especially pregnancy ruts- I totally know where you're coming from (for obvious reasons! ;) Hang in there, friend! For me, just sitting back and enjoying my favorite music -be it alone or with the little ones climbing all over me- never fails to relax me and put me in a really good mood. I also like to do a fairly quick, simple craft because then I'm not only completing something, I'm doing a creative task that makes my heart happy (as opposed to folding laundry, ha!) :) Those are my ideas- hope they get your brain buzzing!
