Slumbering babes

It really doesn't matter what has happened during the day--tantrums, arguments, messes, general wretchedness and nonstop neediness--the difficulties of raising a girl and a boy under the age of three at home melt into the distance when these two children are sleeping.

Though they capture the most restful moments of our days, these photos show so much about the character traits of L and C. When L has been busy or out all morning, she returns to her room starved for time with books. Here she has fallen asleep with Dr. Seuss and some other faves.

And C LOVES his bed. He is so comfortable and trusting of the rhythm of the day that it takes very little for him to completely surrender to the afternoon nap--limbs sprawled, mouth open, snoring. And sometimes I get to rest, too. Even a 20-minute respite is enough to fuel me for the rest of the day come what may. These are sweet moments.
