The days have arrived ...

... when the afternoons are sultry and each evening brings ominous clouds and distant thunder rumblings.

... the garden constantly looks both parched and in need of weeding.

... there's a pitcher of orange pekoe brewing on the deck railing just after sunrise every morning.

... toenails require shades called "Frutti Petutie," "Rise and Shine" or "Dream On."

... the farmer's market is back.

... pools are open.

... the stair railing becomes a make-shift drying rack for swimsuits and towels.

... housework feels like a grueling, sweaty, not-worth-the-exhaustion effort.

... the cool, concrete cave of the basement feels less like a dungeon and more like an oasis.

... PJs for the kiddos consist of adult-sized T-shirts over undies.

... a second application of antiperspirant is required after 3 p.m.

... socks are given a vacation until fall.

... the bedtime routine consists of scrubbing dirt-stained heels and arches, checking for ticks, applying anti-itch cream to mosquito bites and admiring newly sprouted freckles.

... evening TV-watcing is laced with innings of Washington Nationals games.

... bedtime comes before sundown.

... the birds wake us in the morning.

... summer is entirely in front of us and we've yet to start lamenting the passage of its happy, sun-filled days.

  1. Lovely. Love loosing the socks and watching the Sox (Red, not white!) I'm typing as that lingering sun lights the room...and ready for camping this weekend! Happy Daze!

    1. Hey, Adrienne! I've been dreaming of camping -- not sure what we can handle at this stage of parenting, but I'd love to spend some nights outside. I'm envious.

P.S. We've been Red Sox fans, too, after living in New England for a few years way back when they went to the series in '04, but, gosh, our local team isn't bad this year either! Nationals bandwagon, here we come!

And I'm thinking of sun tea in the morning...

Thank you for leading me DIRECTLY into summertime!

    4. Hyacnyth -- That's funny that our minds (and respective weather patterns) are in the same place this week. I'll go back now and read your socks-ditching post. :)

    5. Sarah -- Doesn't suntea scream summer? And I'm glad we're not the only ones dealing with ticks (we've found two so far -- eesh!).
