I love fuzzy cheeks

We're eating our way through the dog days of summer.

We know it's the dog days at our house when the always temperature-conscious chick on our digital thermometer is dressed like this:

Thankfully we've found some fresh eats at our neighborhood farmers market to help us keep our cool in the kitchen.

We've found the juiciest fuzzy-cheeked peaches.

Along with a rainbow of heirloom tomatoes, carrots, summer squashes, peppers and corn on the cob.

We've folded these ingredients into a sundry of sweet and savory galettes -- inspired by watching reruns of "Cooking with Julia" on one of our 12 PBS channels, while we go with our no-cable experiment.

And, oh, the berries. No, mom, they aren't wild, but aren't they pretty?

I made my first ever attempt at freezer jam.

It loves a slice of warm banana bread.

This pint-sized baker sampled a $6-dollar loaf of banana bread at the Farmers Market and decided we needed to bake a batch at home and then slice it in time for a snack before his favorite afternoon cartoon (thankfully we have an all-kids-shows PBS channel on our antenna line-up).

It's not your traditional, dense, moist loaf of banana bread, but this recipe is a pleasant twist. I highly recommend it. And it's much cheaper than the $6 loaf at the market.

I'm not sure how it's relevant, but here is the phonetic spelling of all of the colors of the rainbow, in Spanish:

And our official drink of summer?

The Arlnold Plalmer.

Er, Larnold Pamler.

Armold Paln... well, it's that drink where you brew a nice pitcher of decaf sun tea on the deck, then bring it back into the house, poor it over ice and add a smidge of TJ's organic lemonade to sweeten it up.

Ahh... Refreshment in a glass.

Arnold Plalm... oh, forget it. It's delicious.

We're enjoying the tastes of the season. What are you eating?

  1. Yum to it all. Nice jam. The banana bread recipe sounds almost like a pound cake. Delicious no doubt. Thank you for sharing as usual.
