Anything worth doing

There is nothing more gratifying than ...

* Taking a kebab skewer to the crannies of our Play-Doh Fun Factory and freeing months worth of caked-on dough.

* Getting the bulb syringe up a nostril just far enough to suck out the entire menacing wad of snot.

* Replacing batteries in a toy that has been out of commission for nearly a year, and hearing whoops of triumphant praise when it suddenly comes back to life.

* Three babies in bathing suits, slathered in sunscreen, hats on and still having enough time to swim in the pool.

* Watching the baby fork-feed himself successfully after countless messes following his insistence on trying it all by himself.

* Clean plates and messy faces after an hour of cooking, even if it's followed by 30 minutes of clean-up in the kitchen.

* Unprompted thank-yous, unsolicited hugs and voluntary help with chores.

* Neatly rolled pairs of socks stacked like little logs atop the clothes pile.

* Perfectly braided damp hair.

* Hospital corners.

* Freshly laundered lovies.

* Slumbering babes by 8 o'clock.

This skill set won't easily translate to another job after my children have grown and gone, nor will these be relevant items to include on any future resume.

But for now, I'm fine with that. This is a pretty sweet gig I have going here.

  1. YES! And this list made me feel warm inside as it reminded me of all those "mundane" yet invaluable tasks. Yahoo for mothers. I'm so glad you find the everyday pleasures in being the mama to three of my grand children. Thanks and I love you.
