Years after Hurricane Katrina and the catastrophic flooding of my own hometown, I still can't wrap my brain around how one natural event spanning just minutes or hours at most, can destroy, even decimate an entire town.

I keep thinking the same thing. How could a disaster that happens so quickly leave months or *years* of devastation in its wake? It's almost too much to bear.
