"The sun did not shine.

... it was too wet to play.
So we sat in the house
All that cold, cold wet day.

I sat there with Sally.
We sat there, we two.
And I said, 'How I wish
We had something to do!'

Too wet to go out
And too cold to play ball.
So we sat in the house.
We did nothing at all.

So all we could do was to
Sit!
Sit!
Sit!
Sit!
And we did not like it.
Not one little bit."

So Sally constructed
A cardboard trash man
Using items she found
In the recycling can.

But the rain -- it fell harder.
It started to pour
While my littlest brother
Decorated the floor.

I went to my room
And thumbed through the pages
Of my latest best book
About prehistoric ages.

Mama sneaked off
With her own novel, too
Before we all found her
She'd finished page 32.

While the showers continued,
Our house was a sight!
We made forts with the cushions
And had a great pillow fight!

We stayed in our PJs
Till at least 2 o'clock.
When at last the clouds broke
We went out for a walk.

But the rain came again
And the wind made us shiver.
Our chins were cold, too
They started to quiver!

We hurried inside.
Mom made us hot tea.
Then you know what she did?
She turned on the TV!

We watched "Mary Poppins"
Through the afternoon hours.
When the movie was finished
So were the showers.

The rainstorm had passed
And our Saturday, too.
Then Papa came home
and asked, "What did you do?"

He had worked very hard
All that day he'd been out
While we sat in the house
And just dallied about.

"And Sally and I did not know
What to say.
Should we tell him
The things that went on there that day?

Should we tell him about it?
Now, what SHOULD we do?
Well...
What would you do
If your father asked you?"

(Thank you for the liberties, Dr. Seuss. My apologies for them, too.)

  3. Just when I think you couldn't be any better as a wordsmith, you write another incredible blog entry. This is publish worthy. And thank you again for sharing these glimpses into your everyday life.

  4. Sounds like a great, rainy day! Are you guys doing anything in honor of Dr. Suess's birthday this week? As I understand it, K's having a week-long celebration at school. She could hardly sleep last night b/c she was so excited to get back to the party!

    Nana--You're sweet!

E--L's having a celebration on Wednesday. She's pretty excited about it. I didn't even know it was his birth week when I wrote this little ode to Seuss. Funny. Hope you have a great week with your Thing One and Thing Two.
