Quick Takes

1. I have the following to submit under the heading of "Adorable things my kids said this week:"

My 2 1/2-year-old, C, and I were in the bathroom getting ready for bed. He was sitting on a stool next to his little green potty.

He thoughtfully inquired: "That's the potty train, but where are the tracks?"

2. It's citrus season here. Neighbors are unloading bags and bags of tangelos, navels, Myer lemons and softball-sized regular lemons on us.

We can only make so much lemonade.

I'm looking for a great lemon bar recipe to take to a dinner party this weekend. Does anyone have one they'd recommend?

3. We spent the week before last investigating schooling options for our big girl, L, for next fall. It was eye-opening and overwhelming.

Here are some notes about how public Kindergarten works where we live: Kindergarten is not considered compulsory in the state of California; the cut-off age for turning 5 is Dec. 1; Kindergarten lasts all day every day of the week; and class sizes will rise next year to 30 students to accommodate some major budget cuts in our local district.

Because we'll likely be moving before first grade starts, I'm curious how it is in other states. What is Kindergarten like where you live?

4. We're also researching home school and visited our local chapter of Classical Conversations, which is an enrichment program for home-schooling families.

L thought it was fantastic. Even though we were just visiting, she wanted to participate in show-and-tell, so she got up and told the other children about her new baby brother.

The class was intense and fast-moving. It was like the tutor opened a fire hose full of information for three hours. L came home reciting president names and the law of associative addition and multiplication. Pretty impressive!

5. I'd like you to meet my newest guilty pleasure.

Made with sugar instead of corn syrup, it's not overly sweet and it loves a splash of Scotch and some ice cubes. Apparently for a limited time only...

6. Another adorable quote, this time from L:

One day the kiddos were playing dress-up in the loft while I was downstairs preparing dinner.

I overheard L say to C: "Oh, I love your new hat! Did you get that from Amazon?"

7. Finally, a baby-photo montage.

Have a great weekend! Why not start with some more quick takes?

  1. Love those quotes from your kiddos! Please tell L that I'm an Amazon fan too :).

I've never heard of Classical Conversations but it sounds interesting and worth checking out. And what a brave little girl you have to want to participate her first time there!

Your baby boy is too cute! Have a great weekend!

  2. kindergarten. Ugh! We are rapidly researching as well. It's where we've decided B fits best next year, which is the norm in these parts for boys (wait till they're 6 to send them). class size=20 and all day, every day.

    Good Luck!

  4. I've been looking into our Kindergarten options, too, and I envy you that Classical Conversations group. We'll be in Japan, so I think we're pretty limited to the standard all day/every day option. I'm still hoping to find some great, new program in Yokosuka that welcomes American kids, but I'm not getting my hopes up. The other option is to keep K home with me again next year, but I really think she's ready to get out of the house a little more, if that makes sense. I don't know what to do yet. Sigh.

  5. You know, I love that you drink Scotch. When you are next in Seattle and not nursing, let's have a girls' night in the Canlis bar and enjoy some together :)
