7 Quick Takes

1. It turned out to be a pretty great week for Calvin after all. Some impromptu time on the playground, a little soccer after school and a couple of play dates buoyed him and made the school-week doldrums seem pretty OK. Whew!

2. Ter-Ter seemed lonely mid nap yesterday, so Henry Paul came to the rescue. Doesn't she look comfortable? Lucky girl. I think the mini light saber is particularly useful in case of a surprise attack.

3. From my running notebook of recorded conversations with Henry:

"This is the story of the hedgehogs," he says, pointing to his recently colored picture of said animals.

"One hedgehog was all alone. Then another hedgehog comed. Then another hedgehog comed. Then another hedgehog comed ... Wait. I'll write some words to finish the story."

He runs off to fetch a crayon, then returns to the picture and starts scribbling, then continues the story-telling.

"The end."

Succinct.

4. Tomorrow Nick and I will attend our first Navy dining out since just a few weeks prior to Liliana's birth. The dining out is a formal military dinner with an official order of events run with a gavel. There's also a list of does and don'ts to adhere to lest ye be forced to take a trip to the grog bowl.

5. In preparation for the event, Nick tackled the Navy thrift store for a uniform upgrade followed by trips to the tailor and ribbon shops. (I can't wait to take in the whole dapper ensemble tomorrow night.)

Meanwhile, I bought a dress, booked a sitter, got a manicure and today I'm skimming the pages of "So you're going to a Dining Out..."

Here are some of my favorite notes form the document:

"It is the duty of every member of the Mess to follow proper protocol ... Examples of violations: Smoking at the table prior to the lighting of the 'smoking lamp,' loud and obtrusive remarks in English or any foreign language, carrying cocktails into the dining room, leaving the dining area (even for the restroom) without obtaining permission from the President of the Mess, talking shop and wearing a clip-on bow tie at an obvious list."

6. Just for fun, here's a photo of me attending our last dining out. I remember feeling radiant on this particular night, but it's OK if this image conjures the words: "blimp," "basketball," "watermelon" or, better, "youthful." Those were some of my thoughts, too.

7. My baby girl turns 8 next Saturday. While you ponder the transformation I've made since the previous photo was snapped almost exactly eight years ago, also consider this transformation:

Takes your breath away, doesn't it?

Happy weekending all! See you next week.
