If you're a homeschool kid, who is currently learning about the solar system in science, and a real live space shuttle happens to be planning a fly-over riding piggy-back on a jumbo jet near your neighborhood, your mom is going to take you on a field trip to see it.
It doesn't matter how jet-lagged you are after a three-week vacation on the west coast. It doesn't matter if your little brother is cranky, or you barely had a chance to scarf down breakfast. You are going to see the space shuttle.
It doesn't matter that you have yet to gain a deep understanding of the impact of the Apollo missions, the tragedies of the Challenger and Columbia or the fact that space exploration may not pervade your generation the way it did your mother's.
She will drive you to the harbor where the view is uninhibited by buildings. She will schlep you and your siblings out of the car, point your chins toward the sky and urge you to keep watching, because the shuttle is coming soon!
You'll know it's remarkable when the marbled blue and white sky suddenly becomes vacant of its usual bustling air traffic and you hear the roar of a fighter jet. That jet is preparing the way for the behemoth 747 and its tired, space-age passenger.
You will watch with the other spectators and you will cheer when it thunders overhead. You will do this because you know that's what you're supposed to do.

Definitely the cow ;)
ReplyDeleteMy brother was there watching today with his family, too! He said it gave him chills to witness it -- I'm jealous of you guys! I can almost hear the cheering crowd :)
You're such a cool homeschool mama.
And that clawing hand over Calvin's head is...well, it's kind of freaky :)
DeleteAnd now what? I'm looking at my grandchildren as they watch America's space program being put to rest in the Smithsonian. I remember I was 9 years old when our first astronaut was launched into space. It was so unbelievably amazing to all of us. We sat on the edge of our sofa and clapped like crazy when he landed again after being in flight all of 15 minutes! Thank you for taking them to witness this incredible event firsthand. (Yes, I've had to get the kleenex out as I write this.)
ReplyDeleteI am voting for saying hi to the cow. My husband and I have visited the Ben and Jerry factory at least 3 times and love anything B&J. Great job of letting them see the shuttle before it is just another display in a museum.
ReplyDeleteWhat a COOL experience!! Your children are so blessed that you take the time to do these awesome things!
ReplyDeleteSo awesome! I was so jealous of all my friends in DC when I started seeing all the shuttle pictures last week :)
ReplyDeletewow that is so awesome!! i can't wait to take garrett to the kennedy space center. even though like you said, i'm not sure it will impact him too much. i mean he loves it now.. but sadly it's more a history lesson.
