First harvest

I am loathe to start a piece of writing with a preface, but: Let me preface this post by saying I have very little involvement in the beautification efforts of our outdoor space.

I can't take credit for the luscious, verdant subjects depicted in the previous photos.

Thanks largely to the efforts of my green-thumbed husband and children plus an exceptionally rainy winter, our poppies are ready to pop!

The bright purple flowers whose name I don't know because they were planted by the people who lived here before us -- they are popping with wild abandon.

Our kale--lovingly sewn and watered by Nick and the kiddos--is ankle-high.

Calvin's mint is taking over the neighborhood.

Liliana cut, washed and tossed our first harvest of mixed greens for dinner last night. Then she wrote a book about it. (That's my girl!)

Blossomy aromas and colorful views pervade our little corner of government-housing utopia. It's spring!

We are the happy recipients of some used yard furniture, solar-powered lanterns and a few previously loved potted plants thanks to the neighbors behind us who moved away and let us scavenge their leftovers.

Every time I think about parking myself in one of these peaceful seating areas with a cup of coffee to enjoy the fruits of other people's labors, I'm interrupted.

My littlest guy sees me resting and seizes the break in the action and takes me on a staggering lope across the landscape.

Henry knows it's helpful to walk around amidst the greenery in order to fully appreciate its splendor. So wise--this boy.
