A Monarch Emerged

This morning we discovered our pupae had reached completion of their three-stage life cycles. At 7:30 a.m. we discovered hanging next to one of the broken chrysalis in our neighbor's garden was a magnificent butterfly. It's gaining its strength so it can fill its wings with blood and fly away. We knew the time was finally upon us yesterday when we saw that the pupae had thinned out and turned a sort of transparent blackish hue and one butterfly had already broken out and flown away. We could see the tiger-striped wings folded up inside the remaining one. What a dramatic end to our three weeks of watching this miraculous transformation take place before our very eyes. We're throwing Mr. Butterfly a bon-voyage party today before he and his fancy-winged friends head to Mexico for the winter.
