For Henry

This has become my most favorite day of December. In the center of the holiday press, December 21st is a welcome pause meant only to celebrate you. Today you are 4.

Today I think about worlds turned upside down, of contradictions and unlikely circumstances.

I understand beaming light on the shortest day of the year. I see golden curls and deep, contemplative brown eyes -- devil's food cupcakes with butter cream frosting.

It's the first day of winter, but 70 degrees.

In the midst of a hurry-up week, we went to the park and had a picnic lunch. We climbed the big rocks by the creek and watched the Nutcracker at the puppet theater. You loved every part because you helped me plan it.

This may be the first year you'll actually remember your birthday. I hope you know just how wonderful it's been and how wonderful you are.

Love,
Mama
